A ChatGPT Ads alternative for reaching developers

Short answer: pick ChatGPT Ads if you want the largest AI-chat audience there is and can fund a daily budget. Pick VibeFree if your customers are developers: ads inside an AI chat and coding agent, £1.99 per 1,000 verified views with one block as the whole minimum, 33 formats across nine placements, and a CPA hybrid that bills per conversion. What VibeFree does not have is ChatGPT's reach.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on 9 February 2026 and now runs a self-serve Ads Manager, in beta, for advertisers based in 63 countries including the UK and US. Microsoft and Google also place ads in their AI answers, but only as an extension of existing search campaigns, and Perplexity has stepped back from advertising. Everything below is from each company's own help pages unless it says otherwise, checked on 7 October 2026.

Microsoft CopilotExisting Microsoft Advertising campaigns - search ads with a logo extension, multimedia, product and some vertical ads - are opted in automatically and built from their existing assetsNo - eligible campaigns cannot opt out, and serving is not guaranteedNo - Microsoft says it does not currently support Copilot-specific metrics
Google AI OverviewsExisting Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns. PerplexityNot on sale. It ran sponsored answers beneath its responses, then told the Financial Times in February 2026 it had no plans to pursue further advertising (as reported by PYMNTS)--

If you already run Microsoft or Google search campaigns, you may be in their AI answers today without having chosen to be - and without a report that tells you. That is a reason to keep those campaigns, not a reason to skip a placement you can see and measure.

Where ChatGPT Ads and VibeFree agree

  • The answer is not for sale. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the model and advertisers cannot shape responses. VibeFree draws every unit apart from the reply, labelled Sponsored, and no campaign can put a product inside it.
  • Conversations stay private. Neither gives advertisers chats: ChatGPT advertisers receive aggregated performance figures, and VibeFree reports totals only, folding any segment under 50 views into "Other".
  • Context first. Both pick an ad from what the current conversation is about. Both can also use wider signals - on VibeFree only for people who switched on personalised ads.

Where they differ

  • Audience. ChatGPT reaches the general public on its free plans. VibeFree reaches people writing code and building software in its apps - a much smaller and much narrower audience.
  • The entry price. A $25 daily minimum is modest, but it is a running cost: a week at the minimum is $175 before you know anything. One VibeFree block is £1.99, once.
  • Paying for outcomes. ChatGPT optimises towards conversions but bills impressions or clicks. VibeFree can bill per completed video, per poll vote or brand-agent conversation, per lead or install, and per conversion reported by your own server - how the postbacks work.
  • Placements in the work itself. Beyond a unit under the answer, VibeFree sells follow-up chips, a moment after a coding task or failed build, sponsored templates and sponsored installs - placements that only exist inside a coding agent.
  • A conversational ad you can buy today. ChatGPT's Sponsored Agents are a limited alpha that is not taking early-access requests. VibeFree's brand agent is a self-serve format, answered only from docs you supply and VibeFree reviews.
  • Auction maths. ChatGPT runs a second-price auction; VibeFree charges your own bid, so the price you set is the price you pay.

When ChatGPT Ads is the right buy

When your customer is anyone, not specifically a developer; when you need volume this month; when you sell from a product catalogue (ChatGPT runs product-feed campaigns); or when your measurement already runs on a pixel, GA4 or HubSpot and you want it to plug straight in. ChatGPT's audience is far larger than VibeFree's, and no price difference makes up for that if reach is what you need.

When VibeFree is the right buy

When the buyer is a developer - a dev tool, an API, a hosting or database product, a course - and you want to reach them inside the chat and coding agent they are working in. When you want to test for £1.99 rather than commit a daily budget, pay per confirmed conversion, or run a format that only makes sense next to code. See every placement in the conversation and how the price compares with developer ad networks.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an alternative to ChatGPT Ads for reaching developers?

Yes. VibeFree sells ads inside its own AI chat and coding apps - web, VS Code, mobile and desktop - so the audience is developers at work rather than ChatGPT's general free-plan audience. It is self-serve, starts at £1.99 for one block of 1,000 verified views, and has no daily minimum.

What is the minimum spend for ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI's help centre sets a minimum daily budget of $25 for accounts billed in US dollars and £15 for accounts billed in pounds, checked on 7 October 2026. The daily budget is an average over seven days, and one day can spend up to twice it. VibeFree has no daily minimum: the smallest campaign is one block.

Can I pay per conversion on ChatGPT Ads?

Not per conversion. OpenAI's Conversions objective optimises delivery towards a conversion event but bills per impression or per click - its help centre says "You do not pay per conversion". VibeFree's CPA hybrid bills a small amount per click plus your CPA bid for each conversion your own server reports by signed postback.

Can I choose to appear only in Copilot or in Google's AI Overviews?

No. Microsoft opts eligible campaigns into Copilot automatically and does not offer Copilot-specific metrics; Google says you cannot target or opt out of the AI Overview placement and does not segment its reporting. On ChatGPT and VibeFree the AI placement is the thing you buy, and it is reported on its own.

Do ads change what the AI says?

Neither ChatGPT nor VibeFree sells the answer. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems and advertisers cannot shape ChatGPT's responses. On VibeFree every unit is drawn apart from the reply and labelled Sponsored, and no campaign can put a product inside it.

Which has the bigger audience?

ChatGPT, by a very wide margin. VibeFree is a young network whose reach figures are published live on its advertisers page. What it offers instead is a developer-only audience, placements inside coding work, and a price where testing costs one block.
